Lights! Camera! Action! It's the big night. And behind all the glamour and glitter, before the action begins, the stage is set. That's where they come in; the Prom 2000 Entertainment Committee. Fiona, Flossie and Felicity have been tireless, slaving over the minutest detail. Hors d'oeuvres, champagne punch, floral arrangements and all the crepe, music and magic that go into making this evening so special.
Arm in arm, the couples enter, awed at the prospect of this being their last dance as high school students. And sadly, many of them will never meet again. Their teachers line up near the door to greet them and wish them well, ignoring the hoots of derision and saucy catcalls.

     The men are gallant in their rented tuxedos, the women simply enchanting. And why not? This is the step into the anteroom of adulthood. Any spare boy, shyly watching the band, is gently scolded into approaching a partner; girls gathering in groups to gossip are dispersed among the dancing throng. This is not the time for discussing sports or dissing a classmate; this is the Prom.
     Not all is bliss, however. Tisha and her date, Dirk, are arguing in a corner of the room. Violet, as usual, though present, is nowhere to be seen. Chloë, Attie and Lucky are reading Tarot cards at a table for a rapt audience. Melissa is weeping on Rhonda's shoulder, because, she hiccups, "Lance is not himself. He's acting like someone's put a spell on him, he's in such a daze." Rhonda, though she would never admit to it, wishes Melissa would disappear, so she could continue dancing with Arthur.
     Fiona, Flossie and Felicity flit through this swirling crowd of revellers, modest in their subdued gowns, seemingly fading into the colourful background as they fuss over drinks and food. But, good news for them, a trio of young fellows from a neighbouring school have sized them up, and liking what they see, come bounding up with avid faces. The next dance is theirs. Romance rules tonight!
     And so, the dance continues.
